CFD hosts World FloodFighters Conference

From October 4th through the 9th the Charlotte Fire Department hosted over 30 firefighters and dignitaries from the United Kingdom during the week long World FloodFighters Conference. Exercises were conducted at the US Whitewater Center, Lake James in Burke County, and with the North Carolina Army National Guard in Salisbury, NC. This collaboration took place after members of the United Kingdom Fire Service approached the CFD and North Carolina Emergency Management Division in 2005 for assistance with developing a flood management and response program. The Charlotte Fire department has been recognized internationally for their swift-water rescue operations.

2009 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend

On Friday, October 2nd 21 members of the CFD Honor Guard and Pipes & Drums headed to Emmitsburg, Maryland for the 2009 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. 2 of our Honor Guard members (Captain Jeremy Kennedy and FFII Chris Ashe) left one day earlier on their Harley Davidson motorcycles to participate in the 11th annual Red Helmet Ride to honor our fallen brothers. The ride was Saturday and it started at Anne Arundel County Fire & Rescue which is just outside of Baltimore and ended at the National Fire Academy. Some riders were picked up along the way and it ended with a total of 457 motorcycles. Our guys logged in around 1300 miles on their four day trip. (Great Job) If you ever get the chance to participate or attend this memorial, I would hope that you take the opportunity. Take a few extra days to spend in Gettysburg and take a little history refresher before you go and tell me that feeling you get when you first ride through the battlegrounds. I can tell you, that you should feel honored to be able to walk the same path that many soldiers did. The CFD Honor Guard and Pipes & Drums under the direction of Battalion Chief Lance Foulk once again represented your fire department well, so all should be proud. As always it was a humbling experience to witness the dedication of firefighters across the nation coming together to honor those who have fallen.

Respectfully, Kevin “Stimey” Stines
