On Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 5:19 am, (10) companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (3) Battalion Chiefs, and (3) Fire Investigators responded to a report of a building fire at Saint Matthews Catholic Church located at 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway in south Charlotte. Firefighters from nearby Fire Station 32 arrived at 5:24 am and reported fire and smoke showing from the roof of the sanctuary at this large house of worship complex.
The large complex includes a sanctuary, school, gym, offices, and family life center. Firefighters quickly sprang into action and extended a 105-foot aerial ladder to gain access to the roof. Hose lines were deployed, placed into operation, and the fire involving roof membrane material was extinguished. Forty-four firefighters were called to knockdown the fire and bring the incident under control in 22 minutes. Because of their prompt and assertive actions firefighters were able to stop the forward progress of the fire and limit the damage to the structural roof members over the sanctuary atrium.
Fire Investigators determined the cause of this fire to be accidental and the result of the improper use of holiday lights attached to the exterior of the building and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage. The improper use of these lights subsequently caused a catastrophic electrical failure. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
Fire officials wish to remind the population that outside holiday lights are designed for temporary use and should be used in accordance with manufacturers guidelines.
