The Charlotte Fire Department is honored to partner with the USMC Reserve to establish 40 Charlotte Fire Stations as official collection points for the ‘USMC Reserve Toys for Tots Program’. On Wednesday November 24th, Fire Chief Jon B. Hannan joined representatives from the USMC and other Charlotte dignitaries for the official kick-off event for this year’s toy drive at the Charlotte Fire and Police Training Academy. Charlotte Fire Stations will accept donations through December 15th.
Toys for Tots began in 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. In 1996, the Marine Forces Reserve expanded Toys for Tots to cover all 50 states by authorizing local community organizations in communities without a Marine Reserve Center, to conduct toy collection and distribution campaigns on behalf of the USMC Reserve Toys for Tots Program. During the past 62 years the USMC Reserve Toys for Tots Program has been in existence, Marines have distributed more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children.
Stay safe, happy holidays, and thank you in advance for supporting this very worthwhile charity. For more information on the USMC Toys for Tots Program click on the following link. http://www.toysfortots.org/default.asp

Firefighters Knockdown Fire In Popular South Charlotte Restaurant

Edit Post
On November 30, at 11:40 p.m. 5 Companies of Charlotte Firefighters, 1 Heavy Rescue Company, 2 Battalion Chiefs, and 1 Fire Investigator responded to an automated fire alarm at 7716 Rea Road. The response was increased to a working fire assignment after fire communications received calls reporting smoke coming from the building.
Firefighters from nearby station 32 arrived within four minutes of being dispatched and reported moderate smoke conditions in the rear of a popular south Charlotte restaurant. An aggressive interior attack was mounted on the fire while firefighters simultaneously went to roof and used natural openings in the structure to allow smoke, heat, and super-heated gases to escape. Firefighters quickly located the fire in a storage area in the rear of the structure and were able to achieve a knockdown in a short amount of time. Due to the large amount of material in the room of origin, fire companies remained on the scene for several hours performing salvage and overhaul.
Fire Investigators said the fire started in a storage area in the rear of the structure and the cause was accidental. The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damage. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries at this incident.
