Lightning Strikes, Sets Apartment Ablaze

Charlotte NC – A lightning strike was to blame for setting an apartment ablaze in south Charlotte on Friday May 22nd, 2012.

Just before 11 p.m. as severe weather swept across the area, (5) companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) Heavy Rescue Company and (2) Battalion Chiefs were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 5013 Cherrycrest Lane.  Crews from nearby Stations 12 & 20 were first to arrive and reported flames coming from the roof of a large two-story apartment building. The fire building encompassed twelve units divided into three sections separated by firewalls.

Firefighters scurried into action connecting a large hoseline to a fire hydrant and deploying others in an attempt to stop the forward progress of the blaze. Additional teams of searched the building to ensure all occupants had exited safely. Due to the aggressive efforts of  (27) firefighters, the fire was quickly knocked down and confined to the attic and roof area of the apartment that sustained the lightning strike.

One apartment unit suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage; three others suffered primarily water and smoke damage.  Damage is estimated between $30,000.00 and $50,000.00. The Red Cross was summoned to assist four occupants, who were displaced, one from each affected unit. There were no injuries reported.
